ABOUT GENESEE COUNTY CHAPTER NYSARC, INC.

Celebrating Over 40 Years of Service to the Community

In the late 1950’s, there were few services for children or adults with Developmental Disabilities. In Genesee County, a group of parents and families who had children with Developmental Disabilities decided to change that. They began to have meetings to discuss various issues and provide support to each other.

The parent support group organized fund raising activities to send children to camp, hosted Christmas parties and other social activities. One of the Members, Henry Valerych, (who today serves on the Board of Directors), Typed a newsletter and hand delivered it throughout the area, to help spread word of their accomplishments.

In 1966, the group joined the New York State Association for Retarded Children (now, NYSARC, Inc.) and the Genesee County Chapter was established. We are thankful to our founders who worked diligently to ensure a better way of life for their sons, daughters, and loved ones. Little did these families realize that within the next few decades, Genesee County Chapter NYSARC, Inc. would continue to grow into an organization serving more than 450 Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their families.

Community support is vital to the continuation and expansion of our many programs and services that help people with Disabilities achieve their fullest potential.
